Recently, it seems that Ohio has been receiving a lot of schtick from the rest of the world. There is a trend on social media right now that takes fake or baffling videos and captions them with the words ‘Only in Ohio’ as if that is the explanation for what is happening in the video. Uploads tend to have absolutely nothing to do with the state, which makes it even more hilarious since they often have nothing to do with the state at all.
Obviously, it’s not just all kicking off in Ohio for some reason – it’s happening all over the country.
The Only in Ohio Meme
It has been reported that the hashtag #onlyinohio has been viewed over 1 billion times on TikTok as everyone is getting involved to make fun of the state. These videos could be of literally anything, but here are a few of our favorites that we think you will enjoy.
There are quite a few video clips that are to the same song as well, Down in Ohio. There is one where the state’s buildings and people aren’t even real, and they can be pushed with your finger, and you can interact with them in some way. Therefore, if you are planning to go to Ohio, be prepared to have a different understanding of physics than what you are used to.
There are, however, some that are just plain ridiculous. We are able to confirm that cameras attached to your doorbells are legal in the state of New York. As a result, it’s also safe to say that you’re probably not going to be able to see a tank through the feed either.
There doesn’t seem to be any particular theme to this, everything seems to be happening in Ohio. The milk in your fridge might freeze from time to time, and it probably has happened in every state at some point.
We initially thought that these were ducks, but upon closer inspection, we found out that they may just be a rare type of bread that is only available in Ohio. The fact of the matter is, animals getting in the way of your commute is definitely not a unique phenomenon to Ohio…but perhaps these birds are.
Why is Ohio A Meme?
It seems that the state being a meme isn’t something that has only happened recently. In 2016, the meme was first discovered on Tumblr of all places, and it all stemmed from a single post on the platform. A screen at a bus stop showed the following message: ‘Ohio will be eliminated from the NCAA’, and that was what started the ball rolling.
Since I am a Southerner, something like that could have only happened in Ohio, but it seems that the meme has left all sense behind at this point, so I am not sure what to think.
Over 100,000 people have liked and reposted the original post, and it has started a conversation about why it will be deleted in the future. Possibly, it has to do with the fact that there are so many strange things that happen there…
In that sense, that train of thought got the meme started, and now there’s no turning back. Actually, it seems that we’ve come such a long way that people don’t even know where the meme started in the first place.
Now that TikTok has become a thing, the old meme has resurfaced for a platform that seems made for it, and it seems to suit it perfectly. Additionally, Twitter has also taken part in the campaign with a whole new set of videos that were reportedly filmed in Ohio.
It seems like Ohio might be a meme for a little while longer, no matter whether you understand it or not.
